Community Discussion

First off, we wanted to take a moment to say how much we appreciate everyone who has been using this community. We are small, still adjusting. But it's been a wonderful first week and your support here and elsewhere is something we wanted to say thank you for, from the bottom of our hearts.

Now, on to the discussion part. This was started on Plurk, but we thought perhaps a more open forum was better suited. So here is the the topic of discussion:

What memes do YOU like?

It's no fun if the mods are the ones calling every last shot and not getting to what you want to play with. Maybe that meme you love just isn't on our radar because we're out of the loop. Name them, link them, whatever you wish! It doesn't even have to be a specific meme itself, but a TYPE of meme! AUs and setting type memes (Arbys, Denny's, etc) were one of the major categories listed on Plurk.

Don't worry if it's been mentioned before. The more a meme/theme/type gets discussed, the better!

One meme I haven't seen, but that I think would be interesting, is a Pokemon AU meme. Where you create a team and pick a role for your muse (trainer, breeder, nurse, professor, coordinator, etc.), and interact with other players.

i know i'm not alone in feeling like this but speaking from personal experience sometimes i'm intimidated about tagging someone i've never threaded with before. maybe for Social Saturday we could introduce a monthly "getting to know you" meme of some kind? like the ones seen in some games? if there's already a meme like this someone please feel free to jump in, but i'm thinking of something more in-depth that includes:

- optional links to muselists, kinklists, wishlists
- or list some things you want to try in different genres (general, smut/kink, shipping, action, etc.)
- list your fandoms and hard-no's ("I don't RP crossovers." or "Castmates only for X type of meme.")
- list some of your interests
- tagging habits, speeds, preferred writing style
- share some of your muses' interests/habits/likes or dislikes/turn-on's or turn-off's
- tell a little bit about your muses in general for those of us writing starters/looking at who to tag who are canonblind

of course the whole thing would be 100% optional, but since meme/PSL continuity is also a thing some of us enjoy this could go a ways towards making that easier to achieve, in addition to encouraging more people to tag new people and new canons. your next OTP or OTB(romance) or PSL/meme partner could be right under your nose and you don't even know it because you don't happen to watch Fate/Monster Hunter Madoka or Teen Vampire Diaries or something.

in general i just enjoy memes that encourage stuff like writer team up's like the OOC anon, find a PSL partner, game/meme/psl reunion memes. also silly stuff that potentially blurs the IC/OOC or 4th wall line like the IC anon memes.

i think a 'getting to know you' meme would also be a good idea, especially for a new comm like this one

it might encourage unfamiliar people to tag one another and that's never a bad thing

i have seen this brought up on anoncomms, and as someone who is considering rping here, would like to rp here, and would like this place to stick around long term i figured i would bring it here:

there's some misconception right now about memezilla 'stealing' the most popular bakerstreet memes (tfln, the anon questions meme, anything on a weekly schedule there basically) and/or trying to 'pre-empt' bakerstreet by posting those memes. i've seen wank about this in the past come up when different meme posters would compete among themselves like this and i don't want to see that happen here, but i get the rationale.

it's my personal belief that memezilla should be for the more niche memes that never seem to get off the ground on bakerstreet, just because i'd like to think that on a comm that isn't so closly scrutinized people might actually post to them. aside from the big popular memes there seems to be a gradual decline in meme posting in general and i'd like to see anything that would slow/reverse that trend.

sorry this got so rambly

I have to agree. I think that moderated posting is a great start! But I think at this point you guys would be well served by looking at what anons want from memes, taking a step back, and working on defining an independent niche for memezilla so that it can coexist with bakerstreet but capture its own crowd.

Because it's like this. Bakerstreet exists and memes are still being posted there. And the people who post there probably post here as well. So for...posts like TFLN? It's not a fresh incarnation of a meme, it essentially functions as the exact same meme being reposted. (Not to pick on that but it's a good example.)

not either of the previous anons, but could you please be more transparent with regards to what you mean by the we in "we don't enjoy posting to the Bakerstreet one" and the "lot of players" that feel comfortable in the smaller version? have you asked these players personally or are you just assuming from comment counts, or are you these players?

for the record, the memes that have a weekly schedule on bakerstreet so far are:

tfln - fridays
smutty picture prompt meme - sundays
sexting/texting meme - tuesdays
the picture/integrated picture prompt and some anon memes are supposed to have a scheduled day too, but they keep hopping around, so it's generally 'every week-ish' for them.

partly why there's bitching about crossposting one of those memes out of the schedule is that it breaks the rule of 'at least one week between memes'. it may be hosted here, but you're posting it on bs, so that technically breaks the rules. on top of that, and i peeked in the plurk when this was being discussed/set up, but i was under the impression that memezilla was being set up to break the monotony of bs and avoid putting up the same memes over and over like bs does, tossing more gen memes up since people wanted a place with less smut. it's hard to see that when you're both posting a fair amount of shipping/smut memes as well as the same popular memes that are posted on bs.

The best sort of memes are always the ones almost any character can get in on, in my opinion. It can be hard to identify these on sight though. One of my favorite memes is the old Train Ride to the Afterlife meme because it accomplished this so elegantly, but that got tired out due to overuse eventually. New ones would be nice.

To bring me up to speed, what's the plurk that you mentioned in the frozen thread? I had no idea there was even a plurk about this to begin with, so can we have a link?

and, to keep this "on topic", I'd like to disagree with the first player a little bit—as someone who doesn't keep up with a lot of popular canons, too many canon specific AU memes would drive me, and probably others, away from the community. like, I'd be more likely to play in something generic like "high school AU" or "gangster AU" instead of "Buffy AU" or "Fate/Stay Night AU"

(Anonymous) 2016-04-11 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
in a similar vein to the anon above that mentioned a 'getting to know you,' i'd like to see a meme specifically for tagging people you've never tagged, or for tagging cross-canon. there seems to be a lot of 'posting a top level and never responding to anyone else' and 'only tagging within the fandom' going on.

yeah, people should be tagging out all the time, but i'm worried about memezilla surviving if we all don't put on our big boy/girl pants and reach out to people.

also i loved the roll call meme oddly enough. can we have one of those every month/two months?

Cross-canon and tagging with new people is definitely something that seems to be dwindling a little in some posts, let's have more of this!

Also roll call is lots of fun

Also personally I LOVE MMW/PSL finder memes too, anything to find new writing partners <3

(Anonymous) 2016-04-11 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'd love more memes that require some sort of starter thread from people top-leveling. That tavern meme lamp shading old aim chatroom settings was a good example.

I second this!

Yes, more top-level starter memes that aren't TFLN would be great.

this this this

ideas off the top of my head, ranging from cracky to gen to shippy:

Classified Ad/Craigslist: You're selling something, "missed connections", or the Shady Shit that goes on in such things. Multiple prompt options there, especially with "missing Pokemon last seen..." etc type options.

Dating Site Profiles, though I'm envisioning a comedic take on them, folks could take any direction there.

A Random Scenario type meme that requires the top leveller to provide a small write-up/hook instead of the responder. Ditto for any other popular meme, just do the same thing, but with actual top-level hooks/narratives.

Maybe even a Top Level Content Starter theme day?

Memes I'd like to see:

- Mecha pilot AU, magical girl AU, high school AU, medieval AU: the general AU ones. Star Wars, Holy Grail War, and canon-specific ones are fun too. Alternating seems fair.
- Random scenario meme once a month sounds fun? I think it can be good but maybe not too often.
- Seasonal memes; beach trip, deserted island, winter wonderland, etc. are all fun sometimes.
- First date meme, pocky meme, slow dancing meme for shipping.
- Shirakawa Boulevard, moment after, and morning after for smut.

OP of the frozen thread, just got to check back on it and the response was... as a prospective player to this comm, i'll be honest, it was a little discouraging

i went to comment on this at the provided link but you guys have anon disabled there, was that just an oversight or was it intentional...?

since you (mod account) mentioned "niche memes" as being vague, i'll try to be more clear. anything that's not posted on a regular rotating schedule to bakerstreet (one anon posted a schedule that i think covers everything) would be fair game. i don't personally see the point of reposting memes that are already big on bakerstreet like tfln, but there's some personal beef there apparently so i'll leave that at that. i think the distinction between niche memes and "memes that no one cared about" is a pointless one to make, one man's trash is another man's treasure and so on. why not check the old comms like [community profile] mementum and see which memes worked best for them?

Honestly, what I'd love to see is broader categories. So many memes these days are getting so weirdly specific that it's hard to finagle some characters in, and if you don't wanna play something extremely specific you're out of luck. "Apocalypse" is a broader category than "zombie apocalypse" which is broader than "finding love in a zombie apocalypse" which is broader than "finding love while trapped in a bunker in a zombie apocalypse". Apocalypse is the broadest, and would be easiest to get the most people in, as they could make the setting work for them, rather than trying to make their characters work for the setting, but it seems like a lot of meme coms have more and more of the narrower and narrower categories for memes and those memes were just 100% dead.

tl;dr: memes that cast the net a little wider to allow people more range to work with

(Anonymous) 2016-04-20 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
so is this place dead?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-07 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Kinda looks like it. What's the scoop, mods? Too much work? Nobody submitting anything?
