If... you don't say anything to anyone else. I think the thought that I might be dangerous is helping to keep me safe.

[She wrings her hands, pulling her knees up to her chest.] They charged me with the poisoning of my mother, of another man on the street while trying to kill a different man- the attempted murder, of stabbing my best friend, and then poisoning a witness after he had reported seeing it to the police.

[She hides her face, crying gently,] I don't know how, but the evidence all fit together. I couldn't even deny any of the evidence they had. I just know I didn't do it, but I have no way of proving it!

Sounds to me like you were framed. But nah, we won't tell nobody. Not unless we find some way to prove it to the guys in charge.



But you shouldn't have ta worry too much, 'less these bozos managed ta ferget already who here's at the top'a the food chain.

[She wipes her eyes again,] What... do you mean?

[She's trying hard to keep her calm, but it's the first time she's opened up since getting here.

It seems like at least one person tried to send her a message too, by the bruising on her arm.]

They mean, we're way outta these small timers' league. For multiple reasons.



Only ones' gonna mess with someone we're protectin' is the newbs.



And we don't take too nice to people hurtin' little kids.

[Mary looks somewhere between relieved and terrified.] You mean it?

Yeah, we mean it, kid. We might be former mobsters...

And we don't stand for pickin' on kids.

[Mary hides herself from anyone outside the cell as she starts to cry piteously.]

[Ratso kneels down next to her and puts a hand on her shoulder.]

We'll keep ya safe, promise.



An' we'll start by havin' a word with whoever gave ya that bruise.

[She barely expected it from herself, but she turns to cling to Ratso, crying on his chest.] I thought I was going to be all alone for the rest of my life!

[Ratso puts his arms around her in a gentle hug.]

There there kid, we'll look after ya.



[Finn stands up for long enough to walk over next to Mary before crouching down to put a hand on her back.]

So, what's your name, kid?

[She's smiling a bit through her tears now,] Mary, Mary Weather Duke.

I'm Finn. These are my bros, Ratso and Chow.

[He waves at each in turn.]

If I was caught for stealing, then I would have been okay with going to prison for a while, but as it is they tried me as an adult and I got life. Only thing I ever did wrong was steal to eat sometimes. I don't even know why I was framed of all people. [She sighs,] At least meals are steady here and I don't have to worry about rent. Even though I was never wrong, fortune telling on the streets doesn't pay very well. It was always a struggle to keep mum's apartment.

[stoogesofsanfran]

Woah, even we didn't get that back when we was in prison before talkin' to Captain Black.



Fifty years ain't much better. But probably someone in the system has it out for her.

I don't know why. I don't know what I did wrong. [She stares down at her tiny little hands. They look so delicate and small, especially with them shaking.] But someone must. Or they were just that disgusted with the idea that I could have killed the two most precious and important people in my life.

[stoogesofsanfran]

Could be they're lookin' to draw attention away from who really dunnit, and you just happened to make a good scapegoat.



In which case I double wanna punch 'em in the face.

[She looks to them sadly, but then pushes through a smile,] Well, there's not much I can do about it now, so I might as well make the best of it.

It does mean I will always be able to have three meals a day and a roof over my head. That's not too bad!
