[She's sitting alone in a booth waiting for her pancakes with a tall glass of OJ in front of her. She's writing notes on a pad of paper, scribbles really. When her order arrives and she goes to put her notepad away she finds that it has gotten slightly sticky. Yuck]

[Matt only ever finds himself at Denny's when Karen is involved. Whether it's for a bite to eat or for something to fill their stomachs after a night at Josie's - they wind up here.

This time he happens to be a little late.]

Hey. Sorry I'm late.

[He slides into the booth across from her - already smelling her orange juice. At least she doesn't have her food yet.]

[Karen looks up after tucking her work away.]

Just in time, actually. I got some work done while I was waiting for you.

[She smiles warmly, folding her hands in front of her as he takes his seat. She leans in, the curiosity perhaps apparent in her tone of voice.]

Have to admit, though. I am curious. What kept you?

[It’s an assumption, of course, that he has an interesting reason, but given everything Matt deals with on a daily basis it’s a pretty safe assumption.]

[He grins - the reason he's late is because of his alarm clock - not a robbery or whatever other Daredevil shenanigans he usually gets himself into.]

Forgot to set my alarm.

[He's usually good about that kind of stuff, but last night had him preoccupied - a massive drug deal that went down by the docks.]

[She smiles and nods. It’s not disappointing to her. If anything it’s a big relief. The less danger Matt is in, the happier Karen finds herself. Of course, it’s not exactly as if he can stay out of danger completely living the life he does.]

It happens. You didn’t miss anything. She only brought my juice.

[Karen wipes some unidentifiable crumbs off of the table and leans forward.]

What do you think you want to eat?

I'll just have whatever you're having.

[Having Karen recite the whole menu to him is useless and he's usually not picky when it comes to Denny's. Most meals are pretty safe here.]

So...how have you been?

[It's been a little awkward between them since the night they spent together.]

Blueberry pancakes?

[She asks it tentatively. Blueberry pancakes are a love or hate kind of thing with people. Some people prefer ordinary pancakes over the blueberry variety.]

I’ve been good. Everything just seems to be going right at the moment.

[Karen smiles and pauses for a second. It’s not often that things go this well for her. Life just isn’t meant to be easy. Not for her, not for anyone, it seems.]

I’m probably jinxing myself by telling you that.

[A little laugh passes her lips and she shakes her head.]

How have you been?

[Since that night? is what she really wants to ask, but she doesn’t.]

[He nods.]

Blueberry pancakes, it is.

[When she tells him that everything has been good, he can't help but think that he'll mess that up. Matt has a way of making people's lives harder for them - Claire is a prime example. He doesn't want Karen to suffer the same fate more than she already has.]

I'm good.

[The morning after what transpired, they sort of just got on with their lives. They had been walking on uneven ground in terms of what they are - friends? Dating? Boyfriend and girlfriend? Matt asks himself whether they should try it again now that everything is out in the open and he doesn't have to hide.]

I feel like we should probably talk.

[If he could see her face he would know she looked a lot like a deer in headlights. Usually when people say that they needed to talk the talk wasn’t very good, but Karen found herself agreeing.]

We probably should.

[She nodded, pausing for the span of a few seconds.]

What am I to you, Matt?

[It was a question that had been on her mind for a long time, even before the night they’d spent together. They’d split, of course, but did they still have feelings for one another? Did they stand a chance of getting back together? So much was up in the air.]

[Matt takes a few seconds and removes his glasses, folding them up and sliding them into his coat pocket.]

What do you want to be?

[He knows that's a cop-out as far as questions about their relationship goes - throwing the ball into his court so that he isn't the one in the spotlight and forced to make a decision - wondering if the other person feels the same way - and then he feels bad for putting her into that position.]

[The question leaves her dumbfounded for a moment. She opens and closes her mouth a few times, meaning to speak but never finding the words. When she finally finds them it’s been a few seconds.]

I want to be important to you, because you’re important to me, but I need to know if that’s possible.

[She sighs, her breathing shaky. Maybe it’s nerves, maybe it’s something else.]

I don’t want to open myself up just to be shut down. You understand that, don’t you?

[Her eyes search his face. Karen doesn’t quite say it, her words are just slightly different, but she doesn’t want to get her heart broken.]

[He can feel something radiating off of her and he doesn't need his heightened senses to feel it.]

Of course, I understand.

[And he can hear what she's trying to say without saying it out loud.

So he holds out his hands for her to take if she wants.]

I want to try this - us - again...if that's okay with you, of course.

[He can see a future with her - he can see the man he wants to be with her - good and kind and loving. Not the kind of man he could have been with Elektra.]

[Karen smiles a little, so glad that he’s making this easy on her. She reaches out and takes his hands.]

Life doesn’t usually give out second chances, but I think we deserve one.

[She nods, her smile broadening slightly. Once upon a time she thought that what the two of them had was magical, meant to be. Maybe she could think that once again. Who knew? She had to give him a second chance to find out, though. It was a gamble, but it was one Karen was willing to take.]

I'm glad we're doing this.

[He can hear the smile in her voice and it makes him smile, too. Karen just radiates love and warmth - something that had always drawn Matt to her.]

Me, too.

[The waitress ends the moment as she brings Karen's pancakes. Matt orders the same thing with a cup of coffee.]
