[Finn sits down on the opposite side of the cell from Mary, arms folded over his legs and pouting.]

We ain't lookin' for trouble either, kid. Just wanna do our time and get out of here.

I'm not scared! [She is, but she's doing a pretty good job to hide it for a girl her age. She's only 10]

[Still, Ratso knows he's kind of intimidating at the best of times just for his freakish size. So he crouches down a bit, trying to look less like an absolute giant.]

Good, 'cause they ain't nobody to be scared of anyhow. They're just grumpy.

[Her act falters as she's taken off guard. They did look like they could be really rough, but they weren't acting it all all. She decides to venture a question,] Because you're here?

[Part of her wants to know what for, but she really doesn't want to explain why she's been put with the adults.]

We were out on community service, and our nephews were visiting...



Then some other jerk robbed the museum he worked at and the goods practically dropped inta our laps...



An' we got busted with stolen goods.

Nope, we weren't even the ones that stole the stupid thing in the first place.

From that attitude and the fact that you're in a joint like this, I'm guessin' you got screwed by the system too.

Four counts of murder and one attempted murder. [Some of the other people already knew. She'd been threatened by one or two people to keep her head down already and not challenge their authority.]

No offense, but you look like you'd have a bit of trouble with that.



Unless yer one'a those weird kids like Jade that's a heck of a lot stronger than you look.

[She's going to try to hide that she's wiping away tears.] It's probably best if I don't.

If... you don't say anything to anyone else. I think the thought that I might be dangerous is helping to keep me safe.

[She wrings her hands, pulling her knees up to her chest.] They charged me with the poisoning of my mother, of another man on the street while trying to kill a different man- the attempted murder, of stabbing my best friend, and then poisoning a witness after he had reported seeing it to the police.

[She hides her face, crying gently,] I don't know how, but the evidence all fit together. I couldn't even deny any of the evidence they had. I just know I didn't do it, but I have no way of proving it!

Sounds to me like you were framed. But nah, we won't tell nobody. Not unless we find some way to prove it to the guys in charge.



But you shouldn't have ta worry too much, 'less these bozos managed ta ferget already who here's at the top'a the food chain.

[She wipes her eyes again,] What... do you mean?

[She's trying hard to keep her calm, but it's the first time she's opened up since getting here.

It seems like at least one person tried to send her a message too, by the bruising on her arm.]

They mean, we're way outta these small timers' league. For multiple reasons.



Only ones' gonna mess with someone we're protectin' is the newbs.



And we don't take too nice to people hurtin' little kids.

[Mary looks somewhere between relieved and terrified.] You mean it?

[Mary hides herself from anyone outside the cell as she starts to cry piteously.]
